Difference Between Acoustic and Electric

What's the Difference Between an Acoustic Piano and an Electric Piano?

Short Answer: An electric piano needs to be plugged into the wall, an acoustic piano doesn't.

Further Explanation: An acoustic piano, like an acoustic guitar don't need any electronics to make sound. On an acoustic piano you have what's called the "sound board". The sound from the strings vibrate through the sound board which amplifies the sound. The sound for an electric piano comes from the speakers.

Some acoustic pianos can have electronics inside that helps them do extra functions like different sounds or on player pianos the keys move up and down. On some player grand pianos you can plug in headphones and you won't hear the sound of the piano being played anymore. But the differences are pretty basic. If you have to plug in the piano to hear it, it's electric. There are all sorts of different kinds of electric pianos and many brands. Some of the most popular brands are Yamaha, Roland, Korg, Casio and Kurzweil.
