Digital Pianos okay for Piano Lessons

Is A Digital Piano Okay for Piano Lessons?

The answer ten years ago used to be more no than yes because the feel of the keys were so different from that of a real piano. Now it's a definite Yes, digital pianos are just fine for piano lessons. In fact, many prestigeous piano academies use digital pianos for beginning students. Even 76 key digital pianos are used.

Piano teachers are also using digital pianos. A piano teacher may have 2 or 3 digital pianos for students to practice on with headphones before they play their piece for the teacher. Most piano teachers have an acoustic piano but more and more piano teachers that are just starting out will first buy a digital piano. (Here's a list of piano teachers in Utah.

Eventually when the student becomes very advanced, it would be ideal to have a grand piano. The feel in a grand piano and the feel of a digital piano still vary slightly. This will most likely change in the future. There will be a day when you can't tell the difference between playing a grand piano and playing a digital piano. We are almost there now.

There are some hybrid grand pianos where the mechanics and action of a real acoustic piano are there but there are no strings, just speakers to produce the sound. The feel of this hybrid grand is that of any grand piano and the sound is that of a concert grand piano. Isn't technology amazing?

Local Piano Lessons

If you are looking for piano lessons in your area after buying a digital piano, teachers are now more often posting their lesson info online. You can get to know the piano teacher from their description and profile before committing to starting your lessons. Now shopping for a piano doesn't mean get a 400 pound solid and nearly permanent furniture piece that costs thousands of dollars and possibly years to pay off even if the kids don't continue their lessons. Digital pianos can be just as good as acoustic pianos but much more affordable and portable also saving you money on tunings.
