Songs

There are 30 preset songs in the database and the YPG-235 comes with 70 more songs on a CD-ROM. That CD-ROM contains the Yamaha Education Suite (YES) which has 7 levels of piano lessons and a convenient chord dictionary. The Lesson Grading feature follows your progress as you practice with each lesson and it gives you a grade. A Repeat and Learn feature allows you to backtrack 4 measures while playing with a song so you can get those difficult parts down perfectly. Waiting Mode stops the playback of a song until you play the next correct note.

There's an auto accompaniment that will follow the speed of your playing. You can choose from 160 built in rhythms.

You can change the arrangement of a song by mixing it up with rock or hip hop or jazz.

Sound Quality

You have a 2-way speaker system for great stereo sound. 2 Woofers and 2 tweeters deliver realistic and clear sound. Bass Boost is a feature to drive some extra power to the low end. Digital Sound Processing provides sounds with enhanced effects such as reverb, harmony and chorus. Yamaha's AWM is Advanced Wave Memory that delivers amazingly realistic sound.

Sounds

The Roland Piano Company was founded in Osaka Japan, April 18th, 1972 by Kakeshashi. Kakeshashi started the Ace Electronic Industries Company in 1960 as well as Hammond International. He wanted a simple name to pronounce and the name Roland is believed to be picked out of a phone book.

Roland had a soft name to it and was different than any music company brands. A name easy to pronounce would be better for global markets. There is a song called “The Song of Roland” but this was learned later and didn't have anything to do with the name of the company.

The piano industry has seen a huge change in the last ten years. More and more people are accepting Portable Keyboards as a way to practice the piano and improve their skills. There are so many different Portable Keyboards to choose from that you may need a little advice on the subject. We can help you with some things to look for.

Portability
Portable Keyboards are made to be portable. In order to be portable sometimes a few features you may want are left out to make the keyboard lighter and easier to transport. Most Portable Keyboards don't have the full 88 keys that a regular piano has. 88 keys makes a piano nearly 5 feet long and that makes it hard to fit in some places like a car or on the bus. 76 keys or less is what you'll find more commonly.

Weighted keys are usually left out of Portable Keyboards. You may find some features like keys that have a little resistance in the touch or graded weighted keys that have a little more resistance in the bass keys than in the treble. It's harder to find hammer-action weighted keys in Portable Keyboards and if you have a piano teacher, they will most likely recommend the fully weighted keys.

Features

Yamaha and Roland have proven that their products last a long time and are very durable.

Things to Look for
As far as pricing which is probably the most important part of looking for Portable Keyboard Pianos, you should be able to get free shipping. Also, look for MAP pricing. Keyboards are becoming more and more portable and meeting the requirements of even the most accomplished pianist. The term portable piano didn't exist 20 years ago and the first piano with electronics was still about 400 pounds. Today we have digital pianos weighing only 12 pounds and can take batteries for ultimate portability.

Portable Keyboard Benefits:
The first and most obvious is that it's portable. If you are in a band, in school or move around more than once in ten years, a Portable Keyboard makes things easy. Also, if you live in a smaller space, it's nice to conserve with a Portable Keyboard. You could slide the piano right under your bed. When you want to play the piano, you can play almost anywhere, even on your bed with the piano in your lap.

Some Portable Keyboards have the option for batteries. This allows you to even go camping and play your piano out to nature. Think how jamming around the fire with not only guitars and singing but with a piano. Just add some bongos and you can have a whole campfire band!

Another benefit is having a headphone jack on your portable piano. This allows you to play loudly even when you are in the same room as someone who is sleeping. There's a play by note feature where you play with a song and the song stops and waits for you to play the right note.

It used to be that features on a portable piano were hard to come by. Remember the cheap small Casio Keyboards? The keys were so small that it was hard not to push two keys down at once. You could only play one note at a time because of its monophonic limit. I did like the little be-bop rhythms though, that was always a plus.

Portable Keyboard Downsides:
There aren't many negative aspects the portable pianos anymore since the technology has provided high quality features. One thing that so far isn't a big plus is it's hard to find Portable Keyboards with hammer-action keys. They exist but Yamaha Pianos Prices are still up there for that technology in a Yamaha Portable Keyboard. One other thing is having a full 88 note Portable Keyboard doesn't make it that portable. 88 keys get a bit long and it won't fit in certain places. Most compact cars are too skinny for an 88 note keyboard to fit across the back seat. You'll have to lay the passenger seat down and place the keyboard from front to back. Or if you have the nice option of putting the back seat down and part of the piano can run back into the trunk.

These are just some things to think about. A great thing is that 76 notes on a Portable Keyboard seem to be just fine. Who uses those very top treble notes anyway?

The origination and ancestor of the Digital Piano goes all the way back to the 1929. The Neo-Bechstein electric grand piano came first. This piano was not like a Digital Piano but more like a baby grand piano with pickups. There were still strings and mechanics of an acoustic grand piano and like an electric guitar, the plucking of a string would be amplified by the pickups (small microphone type device to amplify the sound.)

The first stringless model of an electronic piano was probably the Vivi-Tone Clavier. This was a step closer to a Digital Piano because Digital Pianos have no strings.

The electric piano began to grow in popularity in the late 1950's and reached its peak in the 1970's. Synthesizers began to move into the scene. The benefit of a synthesizer is there aren't electro-mechanical parts, another step even closer to the Digital Piano.

By the 1980's the Digital Piano was coming onto the scene. The keys of the piano had no resistance or weight to them. The timber or quality of sound was very weak and unrealistic. They also looked kind of bulky in design. An interesting aspect of electronics is that it's very light. Quality back then was perceived as heavy and solid materials. In order to better sell Digital Pianos, sometimes lead weights would be inserted inside the piano making it feel heavier and of higher quality.

 Synthesizer's were also still popular and still are. They are known more commonly as keyboards. Digital Piano technology has consistently improved in sound and feel. Weighted keys on Digital Pianos started to become standard in the late 1980's and now since 2005 we have hammer-action weighted keys.

Digital Pianos now are so close to the sound and feel of even acoustic grand pianos that it's hard to tell the difference if you had your eyes closed and played on or the other.

Yamaha Digital Pianos have been one of the top selling Digital Piano brands in the world. The Yamaha Clavinova is a line of Yamaha Digital Piano that has been the longest running line in history.

Yamaha Clavinova has kept up on technology and features and has the realistic hammer-action keys as well as graded-action. This means that keys in the bass of the keyboard are slightly stiffer and gradually get lighter to press down towards the treble. This is how grand piano keys are weighted.

In the last couple years a popular concept is phone apps. Online as well as on your phone you can download a Computer Piano. A Computer Piano is just an application of a virtual piano that you can hit keys on your keyboard or touch the surface of the phone to make the sounds of the keys. We also have roll up pianos that is just an inch thick pad of keys that play when you touch them. When you are done, you can roll up the piano and pack it with you. These roll-up pianos have thus far been a low quality type of piano.

Digital Pianos are now coming with USB ports to easily connect to your computer. Software on the internet will let you plug into the computer and have piano lessons. The computer program can communicate with the Digital Piano or keyboard correcting you on notes and rhythm.
